So you all might know that our oldest bulldog Canon. Has had some skin issues every since we got him. We have tried numberous medications, foods and remedies. Canon has now been on a medication call Atopica for quite some time now and has 99% success with the medication. He used to get cysts between his toes and sunburn like blisters all over his body. He has now not had any of these since a about a month after starting the medication.

Our bulldog George had Demodex as a puppy, which is apparently always on dogs, but is dormant. It sometimes wakes up if their immune system is weak. It causes them to lose lots of hair.

He also gets puss-filled pimples on his face when he plays with rubber toys for too long. Nothing takes them away except prednisone and lots of washing.

He's also had problems with his immune system - he had enlarged lymph nodes that had to be operated on when he was just little. I think we've paid for 2 more bulldogs with all his vet bills. BUT, we wouldn't trade him for the world. He's our little baby boy and we love him to death!

Our bulldog, Carl, has a large facial fold just above his nose. When Carl was a puppy I was able to keep the fold clean with a very weak solution of boric acid and water (excellent for cleaning bullie eye folds), then dusted with corn startch but now that he is one year old the fold no longer responds to this method of cleaning/drying. The fold pocket is very red, moist and smells yeasty. I noticed a few bullies on this website who also have this type of facial fold.

Can anyone give me their solutions. I've also tried medicated soap and water, diluted hydrogen peroxide, as well as a weak solution of epsom salts and water. But these all seem to make the fold area more inflamed and I refuse to use any steriod based medications as we lost our first bullie at 3 years of age (to liver cancer) due to over perscribed prednisone use.

So you all know Canon and he gets these cysts between his toes. They are really nasty and they bug him when he does get them. He is on Atopica which a cyclosporine. He is now 100% better when he gets the medication. I would totally recommend this medication if your dog has skin issues. Be warned it isn't cheap about $100 a box of 15 pills. Pet Insurance would have been nice.

We use Zinc cream that is used for baby's diaper rash, works great and is economical to buy. Just wash out the fold with a mild soap, rinse well and dry, then apply the cream. Needs to be done a couple of times a week.

Ralfie has the big fold on his nose all i do is get a paper towel to absorb the extra moisture and have never had a problem but I like the idea of the zinc cream, the biggest thing is to keep it dry. He also had a cyst between his toes it would go up and down for a month it is now gone, a friend gave me some cream to put on it which worked great and can be bought at the drug store....will find out the name.

Recently Ralfie had either an allergic reaction to grass or.....I tried to change his food to Royal Canine English Bull dog food.....he had a rash and a bad one on his groin an under his arms. I finally changed his food back and it is gone, but what would anyone put on this? I used( and it worked great) preparation Hit helped stop the itch, then R7 ear powder to dry up the moisture.

My new buddy Tug is very headstrong & has told me no! I don't want eye or ear drops. The whole procedure has put a strain on our relationship. He looks on with suspicion when I cuddle up with him on his recliner because often that's when I slip the eye drops in before he can get up. Sometimes I can only accomplish one eye. Has anyone got a trick or two up there sleeve? Will be taking him to the Vet for his ears cleaned. Bonnie in Port Hardy

Hey Bonnie,

Canon gets eye drops every day. He is a great patient but his eye lids close really really tight. My trick with him is have him stand or sit and sandwich him between my legs and this way I have both hands free to open his eye and put the drops in. Works like a charm :)

I love to cuddle with Tug, but he stinks so, so bad it's unbelievable. Just finished bathing him with "Pyoben" from the Vet. You have to leave it on for 10 min. which I spend massaging him, and that gets his mind off wanting to jump out of the tub. I don't squirt it directly on Tug's skin but rather put it into a bucket with water. Ok he is all dryed off and on his recliner, and he stinks just as bad. Hmmmmmm. Will go to the Vet tomorrow to have his ears done. Anyone else dealing with the smell, God love Bulldogs. Bonnie

have any of you tried a raw only diet?

I'm considering this for my olde Lily, though she has no skin issues at this time, most raw food companies tout most allergy and skin issues will disappear on a raw diet.

Thank you Lenda for the recommendation for Carl's fold. I found that hibitaine(?) soap was all he needed. I wash his fold everyday, dry well and it cleared up immediately. For those bullie owners with hot spots or between toe cysts - our first bullie Rosie suffered with these and we found a wash with a mild soap (hibitain would probably work well), dry well and apply cornstarch. Also to releive a smell and clear up tear stains - add a teaspoon of vinegar to their water. Took about a week but it worked for Carl - apparently the vinegar helps balance their pH levels. And I use peroxide on the chins of both Daisy and Carl to clear up their pimples.

Hi,

our bullie, Tater has environmental allergies (grass, wool, maple trees, etc). We're giving him allergy shots to try and build up his immunity. In the meantime, his flare ups are awful. I give him benadryl and when its really bad, we put him on predizone for a bit but he's licking the fur off his front arms. Anyone have any suggestions for stopping the itch and irritation while the allergy shots kick in (hopefully)?

Thanks!

I want to say a big thanks to Melanie who helped us get comfortable with socializing our new dog ( a 2 yr old rescue) Stella. The most important thing I walked away with was about the importance of a doggie backpack! Melanie had everything in hers! The essentials; baggies, balls & treats. But what we never thought of was a water bottle and dish!! We have learned how easy it is for Bullys to overheat, it can happen so quickly!! Now we never leave home without our own "Stella" backpack fully prepped!!!
